Department of Drama Aims and Objectives The Department of Drama, under the faculty of Fine arts strives hard to achieve the goal of the basic systems of Tamil Drama and to uphold the concept and tradition of the Tamil community. The main aim of the Department is to serve as an inspirational force to the Language theatre of this region (ie) Tamil theatre, involving innovative and creative movements, rediscovering traditional theatrical elements by conducting intensive research studies, interacting with modern theatre concepts and engaging in experimental and traditional play production. It also aims to function as a high level research centre to regulate research activities through theoretical studies, experimental projects and extension programmes in the arena of the theatre. As our languages, region and culture provide ample scope for the dramatization of traditional literary works, the Drama Department aims to achieve the utmost in this endeavour of play production. Preservation of our tradition in the right direction is the aim of Drama Encyclopedia under preparation. The objectives of the department are To facilitate theatre artists, researchers and theatre enthusiasts of Tamil theatre to understand universal theories and concepts of modern theatre practice. To document the traditional and modern theatrical forms and techniques with the preparation of Drama Encyclopedias and Dictionaries. To dramatize traditional literary works and great Epics and to rejuvenate the spirit of Tamil culture. To enrich the Tamil Theatre by infusing into it the life and spirit of our traditional theatre, by rediscovering their theatrical elements so as to express the modern sensibilities of our time. To serve as a resource centre for experiments and research through preservation of various traditional theatre forms. To elevate the level of appreciation of the theatre goers in entertainment, enlightenment and aesthetic values. To promote Children theatre. To promote creative Dramatics. To co-ordinate various theatre troupes. To promote cultural integration of our nation by exchange and interactions. To propagate moral values through the medium of Drama.
