Teaching Tamil language to foreigners who are desirous of learning the language, preparation of suitable teaching materials for the non-Tamil foreigners and also to promote Tamil studies in foreign countries are a few of the objectives of this Department.
Collecting the Tamil publications authored and produced by the foreign Tamil scholars and conducting a study of these works to analyse the social, religious, economic, linguistic and academic conditions are also the aims of this unit.
It may be recalled that a group of South African Tamil youths had come as residential scholars and underwent a course of Tamil Studies in the Department. A few years ago, two students from Beijing Radio had come for an intensive training in spoken Tamil.
Apart from undertaking such academic work, the staff of this Department engage classes for the probationers deputed from All India Services to learn Tamil.
