Translation of Tamil literary works into other languages and vice versa, evaluation of the modern as well as ancient translations presently available and to work on the theory of translation are the aims and objectives of the Department.
Guidance to M.Phil and Ph.D students is a regular academic programme of the Department with the financial assistance extended by the University Grants Commission, New Delhi. The Department has been conducting, once or twice in a year . Refresher courses for the faculty members of various colleges on topics related to language and literature and on translation of scientific works. The Central Institute of Indian Languages Mysore, on many occasions sought the collaboration of the Department in preparing manuals for Translation and in compiling Bibliographies of Translated works both in English and Tamil.
A few solid translations, authored by the staff of the Department in the yester years have been published by the University. The staff at present give a helping hand in disseminating the techniques of translation to the sister-departments that have the P.G. Programmes in language and literature.
