Department of Tribal Research Centre

Established to undertake the study of the Language, Culture, socio-economic conditions and environs of about six ancient tribes in and around Ootacamund in Nilgris District of Southern India. Objectives of the centre include the study of linguistic and anthropological significance of these primitive tribes.

Evaluation studies of various tribal projects and welfare schemes, ethnographic profile of tribal communities, investigation of bio-medical and health problems, recording of cultural habits and collection of artifacts are the other chief aims of this Tribal Centre.

There are six publications exclusively of this centre relating to dance, arts, besides a demographical study of the Todas. A few volumes of Thurston's study of South Indian castes and Tribes have been rendered into Tamil.

After the administrative control was taken over by the government of Tamil Nadu, the Tribal Centre is working in the University campus for the past eleven years.
