Department of Underwater Archaeology Centre

The main purpose of this unique Department is to explore the submerged ancient ports of Tamil Nadu, retrieving the ancient shipwrecks besides undertaking the study of metal and stone anchors, traditional navigation systems, boat building technology and of the art of traditional pearl and chank diving.

Research projects completed so far, include :
Marine Structure of the Ancient Tamils.
Pearl and chank diving off South Indian Coast.
Traditional Methods of Pearl and Chank diving (Funded by Indian National Science Academy).
Technology and Trade in Early Tamil Nadu (Funds from UGC, New Delhi).
Technology of Megalithic Structures.(Funds from Nehru Trust,New Delhi).

A few more projects with financial assistance from INSA, UGC and Nehru Trust are in progress.

The department is looking forward towards collaborative research, memorandum of understanding for other joint ventures with resourceful organisations and funding agencies inside and outside India.
