Department of Ancient Science Eliciting the matters of scientific importance embedded in ancient Tamil literature is the main objective of this Department. It is only in modern days, science literature, as a genre has become a well-developed subject. It does not mean that the ancients were devoid of any knowledge of Science and technology. In some form or other, their awareness is found scattered in poems, classical stories and even in epics. Eliminating the fabulous and apocryphal, a critical reader will certainly come across scientific facts. It is this information, in all its perspective, that is being brought out by this Department. In other words, exploration of the scientific knowledge, skills and technology of ancient Tamils is the main objective. A detailed list of the flora and fauna, both extinct and alive is being prepared. Research in allied fields with the help of palmleaf and ancient medical literature is also one of the aims of this unit. Mention may be made of books in Tamil published by the staff on fishes, pearls, flora of the ancient Tamil land, etc.
