Department of Computer Science Application of computer for the study of language and other allied research in linguistics has been the foremost aim of this Department. Computer-oriented research is being extended to the study of literature, translation, lexicography, script conversion between Indian languages and also to the preparation of Electronic thesaurus for Tamil. Apart from independent research projects by the faculty of the Department, periodical refresher courses and training programmes are being conducted once a year. The timely job of creating computer literacy in rural areas is being successfully done by imparting periodical training in computer to the teachers drawn from various schools and periodical refresher courses for college teachers also, under the aegis of the UGC. Training programmes for the administrative staff are also carried on. Thus the Department, in a way does the pioneering work of office automation. The Department of Electronics has recognised this as a Nodal Centre for conducting NLP,TTP programmes and has been financially assisting for periodically conducting them. The faculty of the Department engage classes in computer science for a number of PG programmes conducted by the Tamil University.
