Department of Siddha Medicine

The objectives of the Department include the documentation, edition, digitalization and publication of Siddha Medical manuscripts. Medicinal plants are cultivated in the University-owned herbal farm. Tissue culture technique is adopted to revive the growth and development of rare and endangered medicinal plants. Many of them are propagated among the public.

Standardization of herbal drugs through botanical, biochemical, phytochemical, pharmacological and microbiological and chemical studies are undertaken. Clinical evaluation of Siddha medicines and their formulations are also done in the Department.

From out of palmleaf, eleven books of Siddha medicine have been published so far. To enable research in various aspects, a five-acre herbal garden is cultivated and maintained in an area adjacent to the main campus of the University. There is also an animal house in the palace campus in the city.

As part of its social service, the Department has been running an out-patient department since 1992. This unit not only attends to the health care of the public but also helps the Department to evaluate pharmaceutical products of Indian medicine by clinical trials.
